What is Cub Scouts all about?

Cub Scouts is a year-round program uniquely designed to meet the needs of young boys and their parents. The program offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness.  Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide boys through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement.

Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, boys also learn honesty, bravery, and respect.  Family involvement is an essential part of Cub Scouting and parents are encouraged to play an active role in the program. Through interaction between parents, leaders, and friends, boys learn citizenship, compassion, and courage. This family-and community-centered approach to learning means that Cub Scouting is truly time well spent.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can my son join Cub Scouts?

Boys are eligible to join and attend day camp as soon as they graduate Kindergarten.  Regardless of when he joins, Cub Scout Dens are organized by grade level, so they will work on age appropriate activities. Tiger Cubs are boys entering first grade or age 7, Wolf Cubs are in second grade or age 8, Bear Cubs are in third grade or age 9, and Webelos  is an 18 month program for boys in fourth and into fifth grade, or age 10 to 11.  Traditionally, Webelos crossover to Boy Scouts in February of their 5th grade school year.

How does participation in Cub Scouting affect participation other activities?
The Cub Scout program is designed to compliment many other extracurricular activities. Typical time commitment is three roughly hour long Den meetings and one Pack meeting per month. This does vary with each Den based on the needs of the families in that Den.
Boys who participate in organized sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, etc, or academic-based extracurricular activities like music, art, science etc., can be recognized for these activities though Cub Scout belt loops and pins which are worn on their uniform.

What are the responsibilities of a parent?
  • Provide help and support for the den and pack.
  • Work with your son on advancement projects and activities.
  • Attend pack meetings with your son and present his advancement awards to him at the pack meeting.
  • Attend and assist with den outings.
  • Attend Cub Scout Family campouts with your son.

Do Cub Scouts go camping?
Yes!  Since they are younger they will ease into it. They may go camping with a parent, or even with the entire family.
Unlike Boy Scouts, the campgrounds and hikes are kept fairly local and done at a time of the year when the harshest of weather isn't likely. They are also kept to what is known as "front country".  This means the dangerous hills, cliffs and the like are not where we go.

What other activities are available to Cub Scouts and their families?
Pack 3127 is very active, providing a rich environment for boys and their families. Typical annual events include:
  • Blue & Gold Banquet
  • Pinewood Derby
  • District Family Campouts
  • Pack Family Campouts
  • Summer Day Camp
  • Summer Resident Camp
  • and more!

How much is it going to cost?
The annual fee is $24 for registration and if you would like Boys' Life Magazine is available to $12 per year.  The registration fee is paid in January to cover the entire calendar year or prorated based on when you join.  There will also be monthly "Den Dues" of $10.00 to help cover the cost of merit badges and other supplies.

Other costs include uniforms and some activity fees including those for the Day Camp, Pinewood Derby, Space Derby, or other activities.  Youth members participate in fund-raising activities like popcorn sales, pack car wash and coupon book sales which help to cover Camp fees, Den supplies, equipment, and those other activities.

The more active your scout is in fund raising, the less out of pocket money you will have to pay.

Where can I buy uniforms, pack and den number patches?
There are several places to choose from when getting uniforms.  The first and best option is to talk with our Pack Trainer.  He keeps a stock of Shirts, neckerchiefs, patches, belts and everything you'll need to outfit your boy.  These items are gently used, but they are sold for a fraction of the price you would pay at any retail store.  We do this to help offset the cost to you and your son.  Scouting shouldn't be about money, it should be about families having a great time together and boys learning to be great men.

If there is something we don't have or you would prefer a new uniform there are several retail options available.  The closest to our area would be Nill Bros. Team Sports on Maurer and Shawnee Mission Parkway.  The best selection can be found at The Scout Store inside the offices of the Boy Scouts of America, Heart of America Council offices, just North of I-435 and Holmes in South KCMO.  Scoutstuff.org and ebay.com are also options for uniforms.
